Computer games get the blame again

Every time I read an article like this I cringe. Apparently there's a "serious" difference between genders when it comes to literacy according the the latest PISA study. Boys are behind girls in this area, and without any scientific source, computer games are pointed out as the source of this difference.
It's blatantly obvious that whoever makes these statements have never ever set foot in a virtual world like Azeroth. Making your way around there takes a whole lot of both linguistic and mathematic skills. The media loves taking punches at games, and World of Warcraft is their favorite. What about kids out skiing? Are their literacy skills improving on the snow? And girls watching gossip shows on TV, are they better off than a boy writing, reading and speaking a second language every day?

  1. If anything WOW is one of the more intelligent options as far asa mammoth ways to get lost on the internet. Critics are just concerned parents trapped in the generation before. "oh god how did this get on here I am not good with computers"

  2. The media likes to create controversy. It's what keeps them going.

  3. If anything I'd think people who use computers a lot would have really good literacy levels. It's pretty much impossible to use the internet without reading.
